International Society of Biomechanics

About the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB)

Founded in 1973, the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) brings together a global community of scientists, researchers and professionals united by a shared passion for the science of movement.

With over 1,000 members across a wide range of disciplines (including anatomy, physiology, biomedical engineering, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, sports science, ergonomics and more) the ISB is at the forefront of advancing knowledge in human and biological biomechanics. The Society embraces a multidisciplinary approach, spanning from whole-body mechanics to molecular biomechanics.

Through its network of affiliated national organisations, scientific collaborations and international initiatives, the ISB plays a leading role in fostering innovation, supporting young researchers, and shaping the future of the field.

Key ISB activities include:

  • Supporting international collaboration across biomechanics communities
  • Publishing a quarterly newsletter, ISBNow
  • Sponsoring scientific meetings
  • Hosting the biennial ISB Congress, the Society’s flagship event

Ranked among the top universities globally, it stands out for its strengths in health, engineering, science and innovation, and for producing graduates who are not just highly skilled, but globally minded. At its core, the University values equity, excellence and collaboration, and has built a reputation for challenging convention and driving meaningful change.

Whether it’s pioneering life-changing medical research or working alongside industry to solve complex problems, the University of Newcastle is shaping the future, one idea at a time.

About the ISB Congress

Held every two years, the ISB Congress is the Society’s premier event, a global meeting point for leading minds in biomechanics.

Each congress is hosted in a different country, providing a unique platform for researchers and professionals to:

  • Share groundbreaking research
  • Explore emerging trends
  • Exchange ideas across disciplines
  • Build international networks and collaborations

Past editions have taken place in diverse locations such as South Africa, Belgium, Brazil, Scotland, and Canada, with the 2025 Congress hosted in Stockholm by a coalition of institutions including the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH), the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and the Karolinska Institute (KI).

Now, in 2027, the Congress comes to Sydney, Australia, bringing the global biomechanics community together once again for a vibrant week of learning, networking and discovery.
